Philadelphia – Cheesesteaks, Jack Johnson, and a Family Reunion!

This past weekend I wrote one of my medical school board exams and because it’s only offered in five cities around the United States, I was fortunate enough to make a weekend trip of it!  I chose to take my test in Philadelphia because it’s just a short bus ride away from New York.  I also have family in Philadelphia, so it was a win-win situation for me haha.

FRIDAY:

Getting from New York to Philadelphia was pretty easy!  I took a Megabus there on Friday afternoon, which was quite inexpensive ($28 round trip) and super convenient.  The ride was about 2 hours long and I slept the entire ride.  I have no issues falling asleep regardless of when it is and where I am haha.  When I got there, I checked into the Homewood Suites in University City (close to my test center) which was really nice!  I had a sitting area, kitchen, and king bed all to myself!  The location was great too, right by a grocery store, restaurants, and the University of Pennsylvania campus.

I wasn’t able to do too much sightseeing on Friday as I had to study for my test, but I did manage to pop out for lunch and dinner.  For lunch I went to Hai’s Street Kitchen and had sushi burrito!

For dinner, went to Jake’s Sandwich Board for a Philly cheesesteak!  I got the “garlic bomb” which was a cheesesteak with a garlic sauce and fried garlic cloves.  My breath probably smelled atrocious after eating it but it tasted great haha.

SATURDAY:

I finished my test around 3:30pm on Saturday and immediately headed downtown to meet up with some friends.  They had gotten Philly cheesesteaks at a place called Jim’s Steaks on South Street.  I tried the “whiz whit” there and omg it was amazing!  There’s a longstanding debate among Philly natives about whether cheesesteaks should have cheese whiz or provolone (trust me, I witnessed an argument firsthand haha) but I think I’m a whiz supporter.  It prevents the cheesesteak from getting too dry!  I’m sure provolone supporters have a rebuttal to that though haha.

Later that night, my friends and I went across the bridge to Camden, New Jersey to see Jack Johnson in concert.  The evening was absolutely perfect!  The venue was right on the water and the sun had just began to set by the time we got there, so we got a beautiful view of Philadelphia and the water.  We had lawn seats for the concert. We sat under the stars and listened to the music.  It’s impossible to have a bad time with great friends, a few beers, and amazing live music.  It was definitely a night I’ll remember forever.

SUNDAY:

On Sunday, I was able to spend time with my Aunt, Uncle, and two cousins.  I don’t see them very often so I really appreciated the time with them.  My little cousins are 7 and 4 years old and they are just so adorable!  We spent some time at their house and the kids showed me some of their new computer games.  I also got to watch Connor (the 4 year old) play soccer at the local community center!  He was so cute, really going for the ball and even scoring a few goals!  I think we may have a future soccer player on our hands there 😛  My Aunt and Uncle then took me to Chinatown where we had a delicious dinner!  I don’t get a chance to eat too much Chinese food but I really get the cravings for it sometimes, so this was perfect!!  They really spoiled me – everything was so good and I think I ate enough lobster to feed an entire family! Haha.

After dinner, it was time for me to head back to New York.  I caught the megabus again and unfortunately the weekend came to a close.   I’m so glad I got to spend some time in Philadelphia with my family and friends!  I had such an amazing time!
